Frequently Asked Questions

How long do evaluations usually take to complete?

Depending on the type of evaluation and location of the evaluee, most evaluations can be completed in 6-8 weeks, inclusive of written report  (if one is desired). Expedited timelines are sometimes possible.

What is the difference between a forensic mental health evaluation and forensic mental health consultation?

A forensic evaluation is an in-depth, objective assessment designed to answer specific legal questions, utilizing an impartial stance. A forensic consultation utilizes a psychologist in an advisory role to provide expert guidance, analysis, and strategy to an attorney before or during a case. This may assist in understanding psychological dynamics, evidence, or case strategy, and/or review of other experts' work products.

What are the typical costs for forensic evaluations?

There is significant variation based on the referral question and relevant case variables. All services are billed at $325/hour, and most evaluations are completed in 10 to 20 hours, which means you can expect a range of $3250 - $6500. If at any point it becomes clear a case may require more than 20 hours, the retaining party is notified as soon as possible.

Testimony, when needed, is billed separately from the evaluation, and at the same hourly rate. Payment is required three business days prior to testifying.

In privately-retained cases, work begins after receipt of a signed engagement letter and a retainer of $3250. Federal and state-funded evaluations are invoiced at the relevant rates set by those agencies.

Do you offer counseling or therapy?

No, my practice now focuses solely on forensic evaluations, consultation, and training.

Do you conduct virtual evaluations?

Yes, telepsychology appointments are conducted using a HIPAA-compliant service provider as long as the evaluee resides in a state that participates in PsyPact. However, in-person evaluations are my preferred modality when possible.

What does it mean to be board-certified in forensic psychology?
